The story follows a lonely, unnamed young man living in Saint Petersburg. He spends much of his time daydreaming and imagining a richer, more exciting life than the one he actually lives.
One night, he meets a young woman named Nastenka. Over the course of four nights, they talk, share their dreams, fears, and personal stories, and form a close emotional bond.
Nastenka confides that she is in love with another man and is waiting for him to return. The narrator listens, supports her, and gradually falls in love with her himself. He begins to hope that she might choose him instead.
Without spoiling every detail, the novella explores what happens when dreams and reality collide, and whether brief moments of happiness can still be meaningful even when they do not last.
