The story follows Rodion Raskolnikov, a poor former student living in Saint Petersburg. Struggling with poverty and convinced that some extraordinary people have the right to break moral laws for a greater purpose, he commits a terrible crime: the murder of an elderly pawnbroker.
After the crime, Raskolnikov expects to feel justified, but instead he is overwhelmed by guilt, fear, paranoia, and inner conflict. As the police investigate and his conscience torments him, he becomes increasingly isolated.
Along the way, he meets several important characters, especially Sonia, a compassionate young woman whose faith and kindness challenge his beliefs. Through his relationships and psychological suffering, Raskolnikov is forced to confront the consequences of his actions and the true meaning of morality, guilt, and redemption.
